Week Three-Frost Science

Hola,

I started off this week by classifying rocks.  I sorted through about 200 rocks and then spent the next couple of days figuring out what types of rocks they are, labeling them, and creating a spreadsheet with all the different types.  The rocks I classified will be used in a Fossil Finders program by the outreach team.  Although I have a lot of respect for geologists and people who spend their lives classifying rocks, I have decided that I officially don’t like rocks anymore.  On Wednesday,  I went along with the outreach team to the United Way of Miami Dade and helped with the Comet Construction program.  The preschoolers really enjoyed the program, especially when they saw the dry ice.  I was also able to assist with a Magic Science program for young children where they learned about physical and chemical reactions in an entertaining way.  This week I also took part in story time where Jessica and I read to several young children at the Pinecrest Library.  Although it was quite a journey to get to the library, it was worth it in the end when I got to meet up with Jessica and two other Alumni from the 2010 and 2015 YAP cohort.  I think the kids enjoyed the story and the coloring activity.  This week ended with a Fossil Finders program,a salad party, and more rock classification.  Overall, I’ve learned a lot about geology this week and more about what I want to do in the future.  I have also gotten some great advice on college and careers.

Hasta Luego
