My assignments at the Arizona Science Center this week have been quite simple! Considering it is my first week there, I walked and scanned the entire museum so I could get familiar with every floor, exhibit, and acitivity. I did some table top activities, where we get all the guests in the museum involved. The first table top activity was called SCAT, where we had guests match a preserved piece of poop (in a glass casing, don't worry) to its animal component according to clues and environmental facts. Another activity was science pictionary, if you have ever played pictionary you know exactly what it is, then a DNA extracting activity (DNA of wheat germ), a gas light experimental activity where we explored the different kind of lights (neon, argon, etc) through 3D glasses, and a physics related activity where we had to find ways to balance multiple metal nails on one single nail. These activities were exciting because they not only keep me, but guests, tied and interested in science by being able to learn about them in a "fun" manner. It showed me what the guests at the museum are truly interested in, and that there are a lot more families interested in science than you might think! Working at the Science Center has inteoduced me to a lot of activities and knowledge in the STEM field/area, and making me more interested in things that might've otherwise bored me a few months ago. The Washington Week experience has prepared me for this internship in many ways, I am able to speak to others and learn more about them because I am more into people's interests than I was before. Everyone has a different field that they are willing to learn more about, so being amongst intelligent individuals increases my want to learn about other areas (usually in the STEM field).
PS. I have very limited access to a computer (pretty much none, hah), so will post pics when possible!
Miss you all,
Julia Haddad
Julia!!! Your internship sounds amazing. I am hoping that I can visit the center and one day love science. :)
