Hello Everyone!
This has been my third
week of my internship and this week has been the most amazing out of all
of it. I have connected with so many educators, reconnected with the
youth interns, and held a bearded dragon. Also had the opportunity to
show a couple of interns what I do every morning at Explora, while they
are doing camps.
Also, Monday
was my last day of doing an out reach. I went to this out reach with
this amazing educator, his name is Eric. He is so funny and very
interesting to talk to. I found out he has multiple tattoos and each on
of them have different meanings to them. We went to this community
center, where the out reach kits we took were brain teasers, drawing
with gears, race karts, Circuit boards, Kapla blocks, and symmetry. Our
out reach was from 11am till 4pm,
so we had to eat our lunch there. We had four different groups with
like 20 kids in each group. They were all so excited to see Explora come
to them. Once we were starting to clean up, the staff that was looking
over for the last group we had were talking about things that were going
around their office, and so the kids heard and wanted to get involved.
What I did was got all the kids to build a tower as tall as me, I let
the staff know (very politely) that maybe they should talk about the
problem on their own time because kids mishear a conversation and turn
it into a different story. They just said ok, but still continued their
gossip. I didn't interfere anymore and just tried to get as many kids as
I could to build the tower. At the end all the kids left and Eric told
me that the way I handled that situation was great. I told him thank you
and that its just not very professional especially at a work
environment with kids.
After Monday, every day of the week was just great. Thursday,
all of my coworkers and I decided that maybe we had worked extra hard
this week and maybe we should have a little fun. What we all planned
after work was to have a water balloon fight and make s'mores. It was so
much fun, it was boys vs. girls. Of course the girls won
and it was very exciting also because we got to see Explora over night.
Which was amazing cause we usually never really get the privilege to.
Finally, Friday
I got the opportunity to show a group who has never been to Explora
before. They were kids who lived in Las Vegas, New Mexico. They were
from kindergarten through second grade. They we amazed that they could
touch everything in every exhibit and wouldn't get in trouble for
touching it. They also were very excited to see me get out on of our
animals at Explora which is a bearded dragon and her name is Fluffy.
They were all very gentle with her. The children were so happy to be
there and that made me feel very happy too. A lot of the kids got really
close to me in the 1 hour and a half that we had that they started to
hold my had and called me Ms.
This was just an
amazing week and I know next week will be great too. I got news that I
am going to be an assistant instructor for a camp in the afternoon,
which I am very excited and kinda nervous. I hope you guys are having a
blast at your internship. Wish me luck!
My best,
Esmeralda Falcon
