Since I started my internship a week later than everyone else I decided to hold off on doing my first blog post until this Friday. It's been an interesting week with a lot of new experiences. Because, there is no museum in Austin partnering with the Young Ambassadors Program, I am living and working in the city of San Antonio. In order to do this I'm staying with the family of Jorge Palacios, who is an alumni from 2015. For me at least, saying that were the Young Ambassador's are un familia is very true. Jorge's family has taken me in a treated me like I am family. I drive to work everyday with Jorge Sr. Theresa, Jorge's mom is a fantastic cook and is introducing me to all different types of Mexican cuisine. One of Jorge's cousins, of around 3 or 4, has even taking a liking to me.
As for my job the first few days I was given the job of going back through and updating the museum's records on visitor numbers. It is important the the museum keeps accurate records of the number of people that participate in the museums program s because this is one of the ways that the museum receives funding. I haven't ever really used excel before so it was little difficult to figure that out but it's an important skill to learn as a business major. I've also been helping out a little bit with a summer camp to watch the kids so some of the other interns and employees can go on lunch break. The summer camp focuses on animation so whenever the kids go into the collections for inspiration in their stories, I tag along so I can see a little bit of the museum. Since I work in the education office, I also help with some of the programs they do in the museum through out the week.
Although this internship is in a museum, I've learned some valuable skills for a business major. Besides working with excel, I've worked on updating the website calendar, helped redo artist contracts, and even attended meetings. My favorite job so far though has been one that I started today. Each of the interns does a research project on a piece of art at the museum and then presents it. Because I'm interested in architecture, my piece of art is the building itself. It turns out that the museum does not have a pamphlet on the history or architecture of the building so I also offered to create one so that visitors would have a recourse to learn more about the building. I started my research today and going through all the information on the museum has been incredibly fun.
This week has been difficult as I've had to adjust to living in a new city, with a new family, speaking a less familiar language(Spanish) and getting orientated to my new job. I'm incredibly happy I chose to say yes to this challenge because I've learned so much in one week. I look forward to the new experiences and things i'll learn in the week to come.
It's a wonderful feeling to know that your internship at a museum has created connections with your business major. Keep working hard! It must be hard to live in a new place but will all be worth it.
