Adler Planetarium-week 1

Wassup y'all!!!!!!! Los extaño muchisimo!

I'm glad to hear that y'all are finding your internships to be a great learning experience. This has been my first week in Andrea's hood of Chicago and it has been pretty great so far! I'm staying with my sister and her girlfriend in an area of Chicago called La Villita which I'm not gonna lie is pretty sketch but I think my rbf is really letting folks know not to mess with me. My very first day in Chicago I went with my sister and her boo to the taste of Chicago festival at Grant Park where I unknowingly got to hear my faaaaaavorite oldies band the Delegation play...osea talk about good omens. On my way back home on Wednesday I witnessed my very first Chicago thunderstorm and as a lightening and thunder lover it left me speechless and ended with a double rainbow!

Though Tuesday wasn't my first day at the Adler Planetarium I stopped by to meet my supervisors and familiarize myself with the campus and the bus route. The Adler is such a huge, busy, but amazingly beautiful place! I didn't even know that it was literally up against Lake Michigan, giving me the perfect view to not only have my lunch but to unwind after work.

I'm gonna be real with y'all my first day on the job started out with hella drama. I got off on the wrong stop from the pink line and when I got out the train it was hella raining! I had no umbrella, no jacket, low key lost, and to top it off it was still hella humid so I was really musty from both the weather and my stress. Luckily I decided to take an earlier bus and I was able to catch the next one while not risking being extremely late. On the bus I relaxed, grounded myself, and dried, and from there it was pretty much smooth sailing. It was mostly an orientation day where they had me do a scavenger hunt around the museum and I got to see a show in one of their dome theaters about the solar system (imagine the star show we saw during Washington week but like a thousand more times intense). They gave me a free lunch from the Adler's café and after that I met up with my supervisor to discuss more in depth my position. I will be working with the collections department on a historic photo project they just started. Basically I get to look through all these photos(mostly old pictures from the museum's founding) and archiving the ones pertaining to the Adler. I scan these photos into a database called Minisis and input as much description about the photo as possible. I swear it's a lot more fun than it sounds! Looking through the  pictures is great because sometimes I'll find really random and interesting ones. I plan to post up all the spooky, silly pictures I find. Y'all know the Webster's? They've been real prominent collectors to the Adler throughout history and became self-taught curators for the museum. I'm excited to see what other things I'll learn about the Adler through this photo archiving project.

Hasta la proxima,
Spooky Steph
