Hi guys!
Sorry for
writing now, I’ve been having internet problems lately.
My week has
been quite simple in terms tasks, but I’ve met awesome people and learned new
things. My first day, they gave me a little tour of the establishment; they
introduced me to the workers and staff and gave me an overview of their mission
and purpose as a museum. The second and third day, they assigned me a special
project that involved theatre arts. In October, they’ve been having this
activity for the past 4 years for the community in which instead of celebrating
Halloween with the usual characters you see today, the characters are the ones
who are showed at the museum. In other words, for that night, the characters
take life. Therefore, they want me to list all the possible characters that can
be identified within the art collection and do a sketch for each character so
that the volunteers that day have a guideline to follow. Also, I have to design
wardrobe and make up for each one. In conclusion, I’m really excited about this
project since not only it connects the community and enriches the arts within
it, but also it focuses on an area in which I’ll be studying this fall. So, as
I was saying, the second and third day I focused on reading, research and taking
notes of the art itself. On the last day, during the morning, I had the
opportunity to talk to the exhibition designer, in which he explained me all
the process that takes to have an exhibition, from the proposal to the setting of the collection. That was quite impressive. Later on, they assigned me to the
central archive of the museum, having as a task to organize all the press
articles of their respective artist in chronological order. That actually took me most of the day, but it
was fun and interesting seeing articles from all decade. In that way, I got to appreciate
my country’s art and history.
I’m really
pumped for these next three weeks because every day I get to learn something
new from my country, culture and heritage, especially since this year
exhibition is about the Puerto Rican history displayed in art. And I’ve got to
admit that the modern art impresses me very much, since today’s artist have an
incredible and interesting way to portray today’s history. I know that all the
knowledge I acquired from Washington week, from encouraging Latino heritage to
creating proposals and administrating museums, has been shown this week (since
a lot of the professional vocabulary used in museums I remembered thanks to the
speakers) and I know it will keep paying off these net weeks.
I hope that
all of you have been having amazing internships and I’m really really really hoping
to see each other again.
Lots of Puerto
Rican love,
Krystal J
