Week 2 at Arizona Science Center

My second week at ASC has been even better! I finally became accustomed to the schedule, and can now comfortably navigate myself around the center. Since I am the first one here in the morning (besides the actual paid staff) I usually find out the run down for the day, such as how many camps are schedules for today, to get an idea of the number of guests that will be present. I also help one of our senior volunteers professionally clean and dry the iMAX glasses so they are ready for the day. I do a lot of tabletop activities within the exhibits to get the guests involved. This week I learned / did a tabletop activity with a retired SRP (Salt River Project - Power and Water), where we imitated a sand and charcoal filter to show guests how their water is filtered in Arizona, and how each filter physically and chemically filters the water. I found that activity interesting because I was able to learn where the water in each city comes from, and I also understood why the tap water here tastes so poisonous compared to the Florida water. We have also been exploring many activities with magnetic fields, and motor coils. When everything slows down for the day I usually update the Volunteer Activities on Excel (which I have recently mastered the mysteries of the program). All in all, through the plethora of activities done here, I am able to explore so many careers within the STEM field, which opens up my mind to some many opportunities and new fields I could try out.
