Hey! Hope y'all are well!
I can't believe I'm coming into my final week with the planetarium! I'm going to miss all the folks I've met here. Lalapalooza started this week and of course its happening near the Adler, causing hella traffic and making the day really long.
This week my supervisor taught me how to use the office scanner to then input its metadata. The process was really easy to grasp, the hardest part was slowing myself down--I'm not sure if I mentioned in my other blogs, but the collections office is always below 50 degrees and once I get the hang of something I speed up to make myself warm from even simple body movements.
By the end of the week, everything felt like a routine. In all the places I've ever worked or volunteered I feel like my job description would change at a second's notice, but this week I got the chance to live a different type of job experience. Though it needs less creativity, archiving through the Minisis database requires more accuracy and focus.
On Thursday I accompanied my supervisors to a biweekly meeting with the various astronomers on the museum's campus. The meeting was basically catching up with each of the different projects occurring in the departments. Something that I noticed was that I heard these folks laughing before the meeting even began. It was nice to see the importance of a nice sense of humor. With the meeting as an example, this trait resulted in a more bonded group, providing the perfect platform to share each other's knowledge.
In this meeting I heard about a project called the Adler Ice cream truck, where astronomers from different departments take the truck to parks and pass out free ice cream with a free ticket to the museum. I was really excited for this project because not only is it a unique form of outreach but it also really gets people motivated for astronomy.
Til next time,
Spooky Steph

MIM- Musical Instrument Musuem
MIM - Musical Instrument Musuem
07/31/16
My Final week at the MIM was great. My last day was preview day which went well teachers came and talked about the Field TRIP Options. I have been mostly this last week helping prepare for that week doing many copies and preparing more for the craft. I have was able to help the event and work at the surveys table and hand out the certificates for the teachers. :) My collegaeus who I worked with this summer where very sweet and took me to lunch. I really enjoyed being at the MIM and will definitely miss talking to all the people I met. I had to turn in my badge and I was really sad for that. :( My plan is to defiantly come back and help out the MIM as a volunteer. Doing this internship I have learned how to get out of my comfort zone and talk to people and ask questions even though I am insecure. Always keep out for people who can help you in the future as well meeting such great people. Music really is the Language of the Soul and I love the MIM! :)

Last Week-Frost Science
At
the beginning of my internship not only were my parents very skeptical, but
they almost didn’t let me do it because they believed safety was an issue. However, I can now say that if I hadn’t done
this internship I would’ve been at a major loss. Throughout my internship I have gained
valuable communication, computer, and life skills that will be very beneficial
as I enter this new chapter of my life.
I have also met so many amazing people who have given me numerous points
of life advice and I was able to discover what I would and would not like to do
when I enter my career. I have learned
that when I begin my career I don’t want to be cooped up in an office doing computer
work, I’d rather be interacting with people and out in the field. Throughout this week this point has become
clearer than ever to me.
We made a mess with liquid nitrogen bubbles |

Overall,
the two hour trek to get to the museum and the two hours to get back home was definitely
exhausting; but, the experience I gained by interning at the museum is
something I will be forever grateful for.
I can’t wait to visit the new museum that is opening at the beginning of
next year and all the amazing people I worked with (Michelle B).
Adios
for now!
National Museum of Mexican Art - Week Four
Hello!
It is unbelievable how quickly time passes, this was the final week at my internship and I somehow still can't wrap my head around that.
The beginning of the week involved me completing some research for teachers curriculum in the fall, specifically team building activities. My second project for the week researching about The Huichol people to create an assessment for adults. I tackled this project very open minded, considering I was clueless on the topic. I was fascinated by the amount of Mexican History I learned, and wish to continue learning about my roots. Learning does not just involve a school setting, rather happens all the time without us noticing it. Every opportunity is a chance to learn something new and feel as if I have learned more than ever this summer.
On Thursday, I was sitting in my desk working on some research when Rebecca, the Permanent Collection Curator walked in looking for someone. One decision changes everything. I asked her why she was frantically looking for this person, and it turns out Laura Molina was at the other end of the hallway. Her painting, Amor Alien, is one of the most recognized in the museum. She explained to us what the story was behind the painting she created, which was a million times better than reading about it. One decision of simply asking led me to meeting Laura. One decision can change a lot, even if it's small.
Friday morning I walked into the museum, and couldn't believe it was all coming to an end. Ricardo, Director of Education, organized a lunch date for me to meet with two Immigration Lawyers. We drove to downtown Chicago, where we met up with Giovanna and Lindsay. I had Greek food for the first time, and felt a million times better about the career choice I want to persue. They were very honest and gave me guidance that will ultimately lead me into the right direction. All the networking skills I learned during Washington Week have been used a lot since I've been back. They also told me to consider having an internship with them next summer, the world is filled with possibilities.
Everyone at the office was extremely kind to me throughout the four-week period I was there. I felt very comfortable with everyone and they have a special place in my heart. Lately, I have realized that as you grow up, you find people that have more in common with you and have the same outlook in life. They were all passionate people, who had a goal of making the community better.
Working at the National Museum of Mexican Art taught me a lot and would relive the past month again if I could. I learned more about Art, Mexican History and most importantly, about myself. I want to continue getting out there by applying for more internships in the future. I feel accomplished in the sense that I tried something new and widened my perspective about museums. I love Pilsen! Definitely put me out of comfort zone and felt like a little piece of Mexico.
It has been absolutely rewarding sharing with all of you on this blog. It has even pushed me to create my own! If you still have time left at your internship location, enjoy it. Time goes by quickly, therefore make the most out of it.
Best of luck with the beginning of the school year fellow YAP,
Andrea Vallejo

Growing as a person is something I learned from Washington Week, and decided it would be ideal to share my experience from Wednesday with my fellow YAP family. Last summer I took classes at a school near me to complete a Certification in Legal Interpreting. That same summer, I did an internship at a Law Office in which I practiced my interpreting skills. One of the clients I worked with for several appointments asked me if I could kindly interpret for him at his appointment with USCIS in downtown Chicago. The appointment was this week and it was my first time interpreting a real case. It was surreal. Considering it was my first time, I was extremely nervous due to the fact that simultaneously interpreting legal terminology from English to Spanish is a lot harder than you would think. Surprisingly, I knew more than I thought. I walked into that room believing in myself and knew it was one step closer to becoming a better Interpreter.

The Tech Museum of Innovation - Week 4
Hello hello,
The final week of my internship has arrived and I got to say that I will defiantly miss the Tech Museum. My official last day is this upcoming Tuesday. I have gotten the opportunity to get to know some really nice and helpful staff members and if it was not for their help and generosity I would have done really really bad at the exhibits I was stationed at. I am thankful for that. Something that I have gotten from this experience is better communication skills and I believe that if it was not for the Young Ambassadors Program, over all, I would still be that extremely shy girl at the beginning of June.
This final week at the Tech nothing unusually happened; everything went great. There were no new exhibits I was stationed at but I did get stationed at exhibits by myself. Usually for the past three weeks I would be stationed with at least a staff member incase I did not know what to do or a guest came up with something I could not answer. This week I was alone at certain exhibits and yes I was a little nervous about that but, in my opinion, everything ran smoothly.
(Pictures!! Finally!)
Attached above is one of the pictures I took from an exhibit called Just Wing It. In this exhibit guest, especially little kids, get the opportunity to build their own glider using different types of wings and tails. They get a total of five flights to test their gilders and make a goal for their glider.
These two pictures above are part of the exhibit called Cyber Detectives which is made up of different activities for guest to do and this is one of them. In this activity guest are given three different types of keys and they try to fit it into the lock and see if it will work. If all three keys do not work then guest learn how to pick the lock and change the pins so one of the keys will work. (It is really hard to pick the lock, in my first week a little girl asked for help and I tried to help her but to no success). Sorry for the small amount of pictures!
All in all, my time at my internship was one of a kind and it will be missed.
Best wishes,
Brisdy
